Advancing equine welfare through science

Where research
meets the rein

We translate contemporary science — biomechanics, learning theory, social ethology — into knowledge that every rider and trainer can actually use.

The horse has always known more than we've asked of it.

Science is how we start to catch up.
What we do

Three commitments to the horse

Research

Biomechanics, learning theory, and social ethology — with the horse's welfare as the north star.

Education

Evidence-based, welfare-focused learning for every level — from competitors to weekend riders.

Our Core Initiatives

How we do this work

01   Evidence-based advocacy

We translate peer-reviewed science into practical guidance that riders and trainers can actually use. By distilling complex findings in biomechanics, behavior, and learning theory into accessible frameworks, we close the gap between what research knows and what riders and trainers do.

02   Educational grants

We invest in the people who shape the industry's future. Our grant program provides financial assistance to Pacific Northwest professionals pursuing advanced education, formal certifications, and specialized coursework in welfare-centric disciplines.

03   Community-event funding

We bring the expertise to you. By directly funding and organizing regional educational events, we eliminate the economic barriers that keep world-class science out of reach — making high-level, in-person learning accessible to riders, owners, and professionals across the Pacific Northwest.

Our Story

A collective commitment to evidence-based care

The Human(e) Equine Project supports education and research that advance a deeper understanding of how horses move, learn, and function as biological and social animals. Our work promotes informed, humane practices grounded in classical principles, contemporary scientific knowledge, and the lived needs of the horse in training, management, and daily care.

We were established to serve as a permanent bridge between the research community and the equestrian public. The primary barrier to higher welfare standards is often not a lack of intent, but a lack of access — and we exist to close that gap.

Operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we function as an independent resource hub for the Pacific Northwest. Our work is guided by a single standard: if it improves the life, longevity, or well-being of the horse, it is worth sharing.
